I was the only patient

Gore lost the 2000 presidential election to President Bush. Gore, who lost the electoral vote despite winning the popular vote, now views the U.S. political system as flawed.

Flawed because, dangit, he just can’t seem to get elected:

“It may be easier to fix it from the outside,” he said. “Again, I haven’t ruled out for all time thinking about politics again. It’s just that the way it works now, I don’t think that the skills I have are the ones that are most likely to be rewarded within this system. It’s like a washing machine that is permanently set on the spin cycle. It doesn’t stop spinning. That creates real problems for a politics based on reason.”

And Gore, we know, would never ever spin an issue …

This is just more of Gore’s typical arrogance shining through. It’s the system’s fault, not his, that he can’t get elected to the WH. Uh huh.

Because of these facts, the telling was only believed by those who knew the original “me” and could recognize the changes. It was those Precious Others who made it possible for me (both the old and new) to begin telling. Once it started I found it impossible to stop. Of course, I still qualified everything, taking as much blame as possible, downplaying the abuse as if I could somehow redeem it. Thankfully those I was telling could quickly recognize when it was the old me or the new who was speaking. Until I was able to make the decision to flee, they helped to slowly strip away the new me, peeling back the layers of protective deceit and false happiness until they found the person they once knew. The real me.

Time passes.

I ask off work and trot to my Eye Doc In A Box. I get there and there are about eight girls wandering around behind the counter. They all appear to be doing “something” and they could have been doing the same thing. It was hard to tell, they all looked very busy. I was the only patient .

I gave the girl standing closest to the counter my name. Nothing. I offered that I had an appointment. Like now. Still nothing. She was looking at her screen. She asked me to spell my name, first and last. Still nothing. She asked who I made my appointment with. I told her I didn’t know. I was thinking, Why on earth would I remember who answered the phone? Who remembers that kind of thing? And besides, there are 126 girls working behind the counter right now, How should I be able to remember which Kristi I spoke with? Why would it matter, everyone here is named “Kristi”. While I was thinking this they asked each other if they had spoke with me. The Kristi’s couldn’t remember. They asked me again with whom I spoke with, I again told them I didn’t remember.

Then I said “Some one from this office called and confirmed with me yesterday”
Once I saw the difference in all of its raw glory, the telling spread from those Precious Others to a pastor and some friends. It was their involvement that began the escalation of the abuse and the eventual necessity of my leaving.
So I didn’t start the fire (of telling), but I didn’t put it out, either. It was that fire that lit the path that led me home.

Shocking: Democrats sidestepping their own earmark rules

Rollcall (scroll) first reported on this back on May 23, the WaPo picked it up (scroll) on May 24, and the AP has finally picked up the story:

WASHINGTON - After promising unprecedented openness regarding Congress’ pork barrel practices, House Democrats are moving in the opposite direction as they draw up spending bills for the upcoming budget year.

Democrats are sidestepping rules approved their first day in power in January to clearly identify “earmarks” — lawmakers’ requests for specific projects and contracts for their states.

Rather than including specific pet projects, grants and contracts in legislation as it is being written, Democrats are following an order by the House Appropriations Committee chairman to keep the bills free of such earmarks until it is too late for critics to effectively challenge them.
